Other Description:

A collection of artifacts were categorized under the loose heading of ‘fragments’. The previous surveys have concluded that many of the gardens are strewn with building debris and domestic rubbish. However among the usual collection of broken tiles and asbestos panels at this site were a large number of molten glass and metal pieces. In addition a webbing belt buckle (item 17/1/78 recovered on the 18th November) was unearthed with traces of the original webbing still attached but severely charred. It was recovered alongside a piece of molten glass suggesting the fire took place at least after the buildings occupation by soldiers. A number of bullets and cartridges were also covered in a carbon deposit suggestive of burning.

Historic Context:

According to the regimental history and diaries No.17 Adam Park was burnt down as a result of ambulances, parked outside, being fired upon and set alight during the initial hours of the ceasefire. The molten material can only be attributed to high temperatures and the fact that it is turning up amidst the building debris suggests that this is evidence of that conflagration.
