Other Description:
Item 15/10/03 was instantly recognisable by those team members who had worked on the site at No.11 Adam Park. There the team had a found many of the components for a British respirator, most likely a Mk III variant. The eye piece mounts are made of steel and had kept their condition really well. Each piece was engraved with the lettering ‘S.M.S 2 40 III’
Historic Context:
The rim of the lens found at No.15 Adam Park Item 15/10/003 was engraved with the characters ‘SMS 7 40 III’.(left and below) On the reverse is possibly the remains of an inscription reading ‘309’ or ‘809’ The same lens housing can be seen on this example of the mask found in the IWM and dated 1940 (right). The significance of the letters ‘SMS’ is still to be discovered however the number ‘40’ would undoubtedly refer to the year of manufacture. The ‘7’ may refer to the part number as the items from No.11 Adam Park were stamped with a number ‘2’ in the same location.
