Other Description:

Two items were found that belong to SMLE bayonet’s scabbard; the locket of the scabbard and the mouth of a scabbard. The locket not only retained the three rivets on the top of the outer face but also the metal staple that secured the leather in place. The reverse of the locket still retained the stud that secured it in the canvas frog that hung on the waist belt. No evidence of the bayonet was found.

Historic Context:

It would be reasonable to conclude that the scabbard was abandoned still attached to the frog on the webbing waist belt. However the bayonet itself may have been handed in at the time of the ceasefire or otherwise lost.
