Historic Context:
The first large, dress uniform, brass button to be found on the estate offers up a singularly perplexing puzzle. The button was common issue for many units where regimental buttons were not used. Smaller 15mm GS buttons have already been found on the estate and were assumed to come off the men’s side caps. However this size of button was most commonly found on KD jackets and great coats – clothing which was totally unsuitable for combat and would have been left behind with the B echelon units or dumped by the Cambridgeshires before coming onto the estate. Therefore it is likely that this item relates to the POW occupation of the estate.
