Sgt Slater was asked to drag his 2 pounder anti tank gun up Mt Pleasant Road from the crossroads with Thomson Road and then lay down fire onto the Japanese troops at 160 Mount Pleasant. His conduct in the attack was exemplary and he was awarded the DCM for his efforts
