A collection of images taken of the Burial Record Book (W3314) compiled by Rev Eric Cordingly

Historic Context:

Rev Eric Cordingly was padre for the 9th Northumberland Fusiliers. Soon after the surrender Eric was tasked to visit the battlefields of the battalion and to bury the dead. As part of this process Eric recorded the personal details, circumstances of the burial, items recovered and location of each grave. In particular the records give a brief description of the location of the temporary grave and a 6 figure grid reference for the site. Some of these men were never found after the war, their names appearing on the Singapore War memorial rather than a body laid to rest in a marked grave. This infers these men may still lie where Cordingly placed them. Records include the location of burials along Kheam Hock Road, Mount Pleasant Rd, Changi Cemetery and on Bukit Brown. In particular the entries include evidence to the massacre of five Indian Army men at the Clan House on Kheam Hock Road. The entry for capt Watson of the 9th RNF at 159 Mount Pleasant was the subject of a survey of that garden. Grave sites at 160 Mount Pleasant are still to be reviewed This book was handed down to Louise his daughter who has kindly allowed us to add the images to the Virtual Museum
