Historic Context:
This account was written up in Changi soon after the surrender. The official war diary for the battalion from the time leaving England until 31st January 1942 was sent in duplicate to Oi/c 2nd Echelon at Fort Canning on 3rd February. This diary was understood to have been evacuated via Java with the rest of 2nd Echelon effects. The official war diary for the period of the fighting was destroyed by fire at the battalions HQ at 7 Adam Park on the receipt of the 54 Infantry Brigade's order to 'Cease Fire' at 1600 hours 15th Feb 1942. This new diary was compiled during the first few months of captivity in Changi.
