Other Description:

A collection of photographs sent in courtesy of Christine Forsey depicting the Seefeld family and the dental surgery furniture left behind by the after the families evacuation to Australia

Historic Context:

The jewish dentist, Arthur Seefeld escaped from Germany prior to the war with his family and fled to London where he stayed with his son. But as war clouds gathered Arthur decided to head to Singapore where he could start afresh with his other two sons. On arriving in Singapore the Seefelds rented No. 16 Adam Park. Unfortunately the Seefeld's were later interned as German nationals and despite their protestations the family were shipped to Australia where they saw out the rest of the war. Arthur's dental equipment was left behind and appears to have been used by Captain James Finimore, the Adam Park Camp dentist, until mid way through 1942 when it was then taken back by the Japanese authorities. After the war a packing case arrived at the Seefeld's new family home full of dental furniture. The furniture now takes pride of place in the family living room.
