Historic Context:

In 1944 the Japanese authorities began fortifying the inner areas of Singapore. They used POWs recently returned from the Thai Burma Railroad and civilians held at Sime Road to build a number of tunnels in the area of Adam Park and Sime Road. Plans drawn by civilian internees show the location of the tunnel entrances. Aerial photographs confirmed the location and map regression work has located these entrances in the modern landscape. Tunnel entrances can be found today. They are typically horseshoe shaped in plan and dug into the side of the hills. Although now collapsed it is possible that the entrances can be cleared and the tunnels revealed.
