Other Description:

A collection of photographs, letters and diaries from Phillip Cooper Sands

Historic Context:

Phillip Cooper Sands was employed by the Municipal Council as an Electrical Engineer. He spent the years leading up to the invasion living at 12 Adam Park with his wife Winifred. Wni and their son Roger were evacuated out on the Empress of Japan, but Phillip remained behind to keep the electricity supply for the city working. He was later picked up by the Japanese and spent the first months working in town before being moved to Changi and onto Sime Road. His diary and letters provide a fascinating insight into life at No.12 Adam Park in the days preceding the invasion.
