Other Description:
A collection of images painted by Charles Thrale during his time in captivity particularly relating to the Adam Road POW Camp in which he was held in 1945. This also includes comments on his work taken from an exhibition held after the war by the Royal Artillery Association. A PDF version of the catalogue can be found in the Virtual Museum's library.
Historic Context:
In 1945 Charles Thrale was a member of the 'X8 Tunnelling Party' that was marched back to the Adam Road and housed in the remains of the RASC Camp opposite the Adam Park. Thrale continued to paint and draw the views and images that he saw around him each day. The associated text and catalogue not only provides an insight into how Thrale went about his work but also a good account of life in the Adam Road camp at the end of the war. In particular comments about the prevailing conditions, the work that was undertaken and the attitude of the guards and Japanese civilians is of particular interest.
