Other Description:

The second large piece of shell fragment to be found at No.15 Adam park (15/8/15) has no lettering on it. This piece weighs 158.3g and measures 58mm x 47mm. The curvature seen in the first piece is greatly exaggerated in this second item. Stress lines in the metal at the point of the item suggest that the force of the explosion bent the piece back on itself creating a more pronounced curvature. Item 15/8/15 does however have a similar machining around the upper lip and main body of the piece. The upper vertical striations are only 6mm long. The second band is the same design and dimensions approximately 25 mm under the first. This piece also has a ‘keyhole’ aperture in the body and possibly an ‘exhaust vent’ going through the thickness of the outer wall. An estimation of the diameter based on the curvature of the rounded outer edge suggests the round was 60 – 70mm in diameter.

Historic Context:

This fragment may well derive from a Japanese fuze. This would infer the garden at No15 Adam Park was targetted by both Japanese and British artillery inferring the area was a contested space.
